Amazon has announced a significant shift in its return-to-office policy, instructing corporate employees to return to the office five days a week starting January 2, 2025. CEO Andy Jassy shared the new guidelines in a company-wide memo, emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration for maintaining Amazon’s innovative and customer-centric culture.

Amazon Requires Full-Time In-Office Work Starting 2025

The change marks a departure from Amazon’s earlier policy, which required employees to work from the office at least three days a week. Under the new rules, employees will be expected to be in the office full-time, barring extenuating circumstances such as health emergencies or pre-approved remote work exceptions.

Jassy explained that the shift aims to strengthen teamwork, collaboration, and company culture, which he believes are more effective when employees are physically present. “We’ve observed that it’s easier for our teammates to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture when together in the office,” Jassy noted.

Collaboration and Culture Key Drivers for Policy Shift

Jassy highlighted several key benefits of in-person work, including seamless brainstorming, better teaching and learning opportunities, and deeper team connectivity. These factors, he said, have reinforced Amazon’s conviction that returning to a more consistent office presence is essential for fostering innovation and maintaining the company’s competitive edge.

“Our expectation is that people will be in the office outside of extenuating circumstances,” Jassy wrote, underscoring that the move to full-time in-office work will allow Amazon teams to operate with greater efficiency and unity.

Amazon’s Transition Plan for Employees

To ease the transition, employees will have until January 2, 2025, to adjust their schedules and align with the new expectations. The company plans to return to assigned desk arrangements in its U.S. headquarters locations, while maintaining agile desk setups in European offices.

Amazon’s Global Real Estate and Facilities (GREF) team is actively working on desk arrangements, and more details will be communicated as the company prepares for the January deadline.

Key Points:

  • Full-time return-to-office policy: Amazon employees are expected to be in the office five days a week starting January 2, 2025, barring special circumstances.
  • Reasons for change: In-person work promotes stronger collaboration, faster decision-making, and better alignment with Amazon’s culture.
  • Transition period: Employees have several months to adjust before the new policy takes effect.
  • Desk arrangements: The company will return to assigned desks in certain locations while maintaining flexible setups in others.

Jassy also reaffirmed Amazon’s commitment to maintaining its startup-like agility despite its massive size. This return to office is part of a broader effort to ensure Amazon remains nimble, customer-obsessed, and innovative while addressing any emerging bureaucratic inefficiencies.
